Design: Going Gaga for Graffiti – Finding beauty in unexpected places

Graffiti is writing or drawings that have been scribbled, scratched, or sprayed illicitly on a wall or other surface in a public place. It ranges from simple written words to elaborate wall paintings, and it has existed since ancient times, with examples dating back to Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire.

Personally, I have always been fascinated by graffiti.  Living in New York City after college I often found beauty in unexpected things, one of which was graffiti.  It’s colors, shapes, and agendas have intrigued and captivated me.  So, on a recent trip to Miami I was dying to check out Wynwood Walls, an art installation conceived by Tony Goldman in 2009.

Originally intended to transform the run down warehouse district of Wynwood, the Wynwood Walls art installation initially consisted of six buildings.  These six windowless warehouses served as giant canvases for the under-appreciated and misinterpreted street art known as graffiti.  From inception, the Wynwood Arts District has grown to become a mecca for great street artists from all over the world, and is now also home to numerous galleries, restaurants, and an unlimited amount of inspiration.

Design Inspiration: the perfect piece of Majolica

What is Majolica???  Majolica is brightly colored earthenware pottery with a clear lead glaze, and it can be just what the doctor ordered when it comes to adding a little pizzaz to your decor.

Since the 14th century artisans have been making these clay treasures.  Taking care to decorate them with colorful embellishments and interesting details.   While some pieces of majolica are purpose built, a pitcher, an oyster plate, or a serving platter, others are nothing more than wonderful works of art, meant only to be displayed and admired.

Majolica (a general term) comes from all over the world in many shapes and sizes.  Being from a coastal area, my favorite majolica pieces are always those which have been inspired by the sea! Adorned with birds, fish, shells, seaweed, and coral, these sea themed wonders are the perfect touch in any coastal home! Put them on the bookshelves, use them to store treasures found on the beach, or mix them in with your everyday tableware to add a little pop of color.

For some of my favorite pieces and ideas on how to display these wonderful treasures, check out the pictures below.  To learn more on how to start your own collection, or to become the proud owner of one of these earthenware creations, check out our website at
