Destination Austin…

Texas that is, black gold, Texas tea.  A city that Old Jed the millionaire would most certainly never leave for Beverly…Hills that is.  Austin has its own swimming pools and movie stars and a heapin’ helpin’ of their very own and self proclaimed “weird” hospitality!

For any of you that happen to find yourself in or near Austin for any reason, take advantage of the eccentricity that Austin residents manage to maintain despite the rapid development their city is undergoing!

After a long weekend in Austin (which was not nearly enough time to take in everything the city has to offer)  I have to say… I am SMITTEN!  If only the ocean wasn’t 3 + hours away I might even consider moving.  Well, enough about me… here are a few recommendations from my time in Austin.

Odd Duck- 1201 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX 78704

The trailer that brought Chef Bryce Gilmore to the forefront, known for making farm fresh cuisine accessible to the masses, is now open on a grander scale.  In December of 2014 Gilmore and partners, Sam Hellman-Mass, Jason James, Mark Buley and Dylan Gilmore created a 110-seat restaurant with an outdoor patio that overlooks the corner of Gibson and South Lamar with views of downtown Austin. Menu offerings feature local, seasonal fare prepared on the restaurant’s wood fired grill and oven. Odd Duck offers an approachable, yet finely curated wine and beer list and a full bar. Everything is amazing…but be sure to try the ham & cheese stuffed pretzels with homemade béchamel, the grilled bacon with corn pudding, chantrelles and mustard greens, and the goat confit with red chili, gordita, goat cheese, and popcorn.  For dessert you can’t miss with either the coconut rice pudding which comes topped with shaved ice or the apple cake donut served with mesquite bean ice cream.  If you’re thirsty the draft apple cider Moscow mule is to die for!!!!  Made with house ginger beer, apple cider, citrus, and vodka, this cocktail is both thirst quenching and delightful!

Franklin BBQ- 900 E 11th St, Austin, TX 78702

Aaron Franklin and his wife Stacy debuted Franklin BBQ in late 2009 on an East Austin parking lot. What started from the walk-up window of a travel trailer turned brisket stand, quickly morphed into a bustling brick and mortar location.  Everything here is great!  A word of advice they open at 11am, but be there by 9am or you will find a line around the block.

I would be remiss if I didn’t say that there are hundreds of fabulous restaurants in Austin.  For the sake of time I can’t mention them all…but it’s safe to say that whatever type of food you fancy, Austin will not disappoint!  From food trailers to fine dining, Austin is a foodies fantasy factory!
