School has started and fall is banging on the door.  With the change of seasons comes a whole new mix of products that will be available in our shop and on our website.  Join us over the next few weeks as we highlight some of our favorite new goods, talk about fall trends, and showcase some great autumn escapes.

With cool evenings finally on the horizon, we start our fall series with the art of wool, and more specifically a look at America’s last true vertical woolen mill located in Faribault Minnesota.

Founded on the banks of the Cannon River in Faribault, MN, the Faribault Woolen Mill is a living testament to American craftsmanship. Founded in 1865, the year Lincoln died and the Civil War ended, Faribault woolens are renowned for their comfort and quality. From providing woolen blankets for pioneers heading west to comforting our troops through two world wars, their woolens are woven into American history.

Today the craftspeople are using the same techniques and machinery to create wool blankets, throws and accessories that were used 148 years ago.

Faribault’s blankets and throws are offered in a range of colors and patterns. One of their best sellers is the SoHo (short for stuff on hand only – with a nod to their favorite part of Manhattan); it was created in 2008 when the mill was at the brink of going out of business and a mill designer was directed to create a salable throw using remnant yarns salvaged from the mill’s dwindling inventory.
