Valentines Day: Hallmark Holiday or Romantic Reality –

After recently blogging about great Valentine’s Day gifts and craft projects, the next logical post seemed like it should be “Where to find the best Valentine’s Day cards”… a no brainer, right?  But after a little thought and tinge of remorse, I began to wonder if all of these Valentine’s Day blog posts were a wee bit hypocritical.  Why, you might ask? Well, I have always considered Valentine’s Day something of a “Hallmark Holiday.”  You know… a holiday that exists primarily for commercial purposes, rather than to commemorate a traditionally or historically significant event.  So, after a bit of contemplation (not too much – after all I’m not solving any of the world’s problems…merely blogging about style) I decided that it was time to take a stand on exactly what Valentine’s Day means to me.  So here goes…

Hallmark Holiday or not, to me Valentine’s day is a day to show a little extra appreciation for the special people in our lives; a boyfriend, girlfriend, mother, father, sister, brother, friend, or co-worker.  So whether you do it with a note, a phone call, a gift, or even just a smile, make someone’s day this February! Oh and if you are worried about the commercial exploitation that comes with being a Hallmark Holiday, why not shop small and support the local businesses in your town! In honor of that thought…here are 10 of our favorite Valentine’s Day cards, all made by small businesses.

Gift Guide: gifts for her

I love hunting for the perfect present, something that surprises and delights that special someone!  I especially love giving a gift that is unique and different.  Each year it seems to get a little harder to find things that I have never seen before…but when I do, it is definitely exciting.  Don’t get me wrong… all of the magazines have some great ideas in their holiday gift guides, but for me some of the best presents are those that come from small boutiques and undiscovered, or up and coming designers!  Here are a few of my favorite boutique finds this season.

In the Melange collection, Molly continues to experiment with new materials – exploring the potential of lasercut leather and metal. The jewelry is a mixture of existing designs made with new materials, and playful combinations of triangles and tabs – largely inspired by designs and techniques used in North and West African jewelry. The jewelry is made with metallic leathers, gold plated brass and rhodium plated stainless steel, and soft coral and mint waxed linen – a shimmery and luxe palette.
