Juice Cleanse: Fact or Fable

Working as a yacht stewardess, I have had the occasional request for green juice.  Usually the request comes from an overly concerned super skinny guest, who drinks it as a breakfast substitute, and doesn’t even finish the whole thing.  I don’t know about you, but if that was all I allowed myself for my favorite meal of the day…you better believe I would drink the entire thing, and maybe even lick the glass!

With the occasional guest being my only exposure to “juicing”, I didn’t really know too much about it.  That is until recently, when one of my fellow crew-members presented us with a friendly challenge…. only drink juice for breakfast, lunch and dinner for the next three days.  Unable to pass up a challenge, I agreed to participate in the 3 day juice cleanse.  Curious as to why people subject themselves to such a thing…I took to the internet.

As it turns out, most people try juice cleanses because they feel bloated, sluggish, and overweight.  Ok I get it, I can definitely identify with all those things.  What I’m not sure about though are the claims that a juice cleanse eliminates toxins, cleans out my system, and somehow will make me a new person.  I guess I would have to wait and see, and so with that my 3 day juice cleanse began…

Day 1: juice cleanse suja

Breakfast – The Morning Glory

Lunch – The Bruschetta Tang

Dinner – The Green Machine

Headaches, cravings and a slight lack of energy left me wondering why I had subjected myself to this juice cleanse

Dinner – Sunset Passion

After my morning workout, I weighed myself to find that I had lost 2 lbs.   That tidbit of information was just enough to get me through what was definitely the hardest of the 3 days.  More headaches, cravings, and general lack of energy, but I lost 2 lbs…have to keep going!

Day 3: juice cleanse beet juice

Breakfast – The Morning Glory (my favorite of all the juices)

Lunch – The Bruschetta Tang (not nearly as bad as it sounds)

Dinner – Kale soup (not part of the diet, but we treated ourselves to a celebratory dinner)

Long story short, I was unaware of just how much produce, motivation, and money, went into one of these juice cleanses.  After 3 days of “juicing”, close to 10lbs of produce, and over $200, I ‘m still not sure it was worth it??  Do I feel healthier?  I don’t think so, maybe a little.  Have I lost any weight? Yes, but I’m not entirely convinced that those 4 lbs won’t be back to haunt me by the end of the week.  At the end of the day, after the last cucumber had been juiced, the last apple cut, and the final beet pureed, I can honestly say that juicing is a trend which I can neither endorse nor denounce.
