Headboards 101 –

A headboard can really complete a bedroom, but how do you choose one that’s right for you?  What should you take into consideration when choosing a headboard?  Check out the following for the answers to these questions and more…

1. Many people think that you can’t put a headboard in front of a window.  I totally disagree, windows don’t have to be your enemy.  If the configuration of your space dictates that your bed must go against a window, don’t be afarid, you have plenty of options.  The most important thing to keep in mind is the height of the headboard.  Try choosing a headboard that is low-medium height, as you do not want it to block the natural light provided by the windows.

2.Headboards and Footboards do not have to go hand in hand.  Matching bedroom sets are so 1975.  Don’t be afraid to mix it up.  Pick a headboard you like, and instead of using a footboard try an upholstered bench, vintage trunk, desk, or even an altar table.

3. Today there are so many options, think outside the box.  If you live in an area that is prone to mold, mildew, salt air, or other environmental factors, try painting or stenciling the headboard directly on the wall.

4.  With a global movement towards reusing, reducing, and recycling, why not try something that’s environmentally friendly.  Unlikely headboard options include; recycled pallets, an old mantle, a vintage door, or even that set of encyclopedias you haven’t read since the 6th grade.

5. Upholstered headboards are always great.  When choosing an upholstered headboard make sure you love the fabric, especially if it’s in the master bedroom, because you will have to look at it everyday!  Sometimes bold prints and vibrant colors can overwhelm a space and make it challenging to match other accessories, so consider all elements of the room when choosing an upholstery fabric .  Finally, don’t be afraid to go with unconventional shapes like this India inspired headboard by John Robshaw!
